Libertarian Party Statement of Principles

We, the members of the Libertarian Party, challenge the cult of the omnipotent state and defend the rights of the individual. We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose. Governments throughout history have regularly operated on the opposite principle, that the state has the right to dispose of the lives of individuals and the fruits of their labor. Even within the United States, all political parties other than our own grant to government the right to regulate the lives of individuals and seize the fruits of their labor without their consent. We, on the contrary, deny the right of any government to do these things, and hold that where governments exist, they must not violate the rights of the individual; namely, (1) the right to life - accordingly we support the prohibition of the initiation of physical force against others; (2) the right to liberty of speech and action - accordingly we oppose all attempts by government to abridge the freedom of speech and press, as well as government censorship in any form; (3) the right to property - accordingly we oppose all government interference with private property, such as confiscation, nationalization, and eminent domain, and support the prohibition of robbery, trespass, fraud, and misrepresentation. Since governments, where instituted, must not violate individual rights, we oppose all interference by government in the areas of voluntary and contractual relations among individuals. People should not be forced to sacrifice their lives and property for the benefit of others. They should be left free by government to deal with one another as free traders, and the resultant economic system, the only one compatible with the protection of individual rights, is the free market.

If you live in or near the Portland Metropolitan area, you can come to the LPO's weekly VOLUNTEER NIGHT. The event takes place every Monday night from 6:00-9:00 PM (excluding holidays) at the LPO Office, 10211 SW Barbur Blvd. Suite 210A in southwest Portland, 97219. We are located on the 2nd floor of Building A.

Envelope stuffing, newsletter folding and other kinds of work gets done, but the event is largely social and gives everyone a chance to meet new friends. To find out more about our current projects, join our meetup.com libertarian group.

How can I help the LPO?

There are many ways to help the Libertarian Party of Oregon! Here are just a few:

1. Register or Re-Register as a Libertarian Party Voter

There are already over 15,000 registered Libertarian Party voters in Oregon, easily making it Oregon's third largest political party. Registered Libertarian voters can take part in our candidate nominating conventions and are eligible to run as candidates. You can download a voter registration form by clicking HERE!

2. Become a Dues-Paying Member

For $50 per year you will become a dues-paying member of the LPO, which does not require that you register as a Libertarian voter. Your yearly dues payment will be applied solely to membership-related expenses at the LPO. You will receive a one year subscription to the LPO News, and have the right to vote in all business conventions and mail ballots. If you live in Oregon, the Political Tax Credit makes your membership effectively free! Click HERE for more information on how to join the LPO.

3. Participate In Volunteer Night on Mondays

4. Sign up for the LPO Meetup group.

5. Make a donation

Every Dollar donated to the LPO helps! When you make a donation for purposes other than membership renewal, you can specify how you would like the money to be used (i.e. servicing debt, publicity, paying rent, etc.)

6. Attend an LP meeting or event.

Attend a meeting at your local county affiliate party or go to a LPO sponsored event. To find out about local Libertarian Party events, contact your County Chairperson. To find out about upcoming LPO events, sign up for the LPO Announce Email List.

7. Become a County Committee Officer.

Many of our county parties need officers, and all could use the help of additional Precinct Chair Persons (PCPs) and volunteers. Get in touch with your local County Chairperson to find out how you can help! If there is no Libertarian Party affiliate organized in your county, contact the State Chairperson for more information and assistance in organizing your county.

8. Become an office or campaign volunteer.

There are many opportunities to volunteer on long-term projects outside of volunteer night. Come to any LPO event, such as meetups or volunteer night and tell us about your abilities, interests, and availability. You can also call us at (503) 245-5942.

9. Run for Public Office.

Due to our rising numbers and hard work, the number of Libertarian Public Office holders has been steadily increasing. If you would like to run for a local nonpartisan office, contact your county affiliate party or our headquarters at (503) 245-5942.

If you would like to run for partisan office, you first need to win the LP nomination at our convention. Some candidates run as informational (paper) candidates and spend no money. Some help build the party by campaigning full time (16 hour days) and donating their own money along with raising funds.
